What types of calls does our Fire Department respond to?

Our volunteers respond to wildfire, vehicle and structure fires. Volunteers play a critical role in responding to fires. These dedicated individuals work tirelessly to contain the blaze, rescue those in danger, and prevent further damage to the property. Our volunteer firefighters are driven by a strong sense of community and a commitment to protecting lives and property.

In our rural settings, vehicle accidents can occur on long, isolated stretches of road, sometimes involving multiple vehicles or hazardous materials. Firefighters assist with extricating trapped individuals, scene management and other duties like low angle rescue and assisting our paramedic crews where needed.

Our department works with our counterparts at BC Ambulance and often respond to medical emergencies where ambulances attendants need assistance. This can include a wide variety of situations such as lift assists, heart attacks, strokes, or trauma from accidents.

Snowstorms, high winds, and heavy rains in rural areas often lead to trees falling, downed powerlines and other debris blocking roads, driveways, or emergency routes. Firefighters may be called to provide traffic/scene management.

When neighboring communities experience large-scale emergencies such as major wildfires, floods, or accidents, fire departments often provide mutual aid. This collaboration ensures that additional resources are mobilized, helping to manage large incidents that would otherwise overwhelm a single department.

Our volunteers once they are properly trained, have the opportunity to go out on deployment. This work consists of structure protection and structure defense. Crews are paid by BC Wildfire for their services, these deployments also generate income for the District of Mackenzie.
